Heaven or Hell?

That was the question, wasn’t it?  Was she among the elect, or was she damned?  That was the only question that mattered.

Heaven or Hell?

The question haunted her, stalked her, hunted her.  Whenever she thought she had finally escaped it, if just for a moment, it found her again, pecking mercilessly at her soul.  Anne walked the streets of Boston, carrying her mewling infant, hoping that the exercise would drive the question out of her mind.

Heaven or Hell?

Anne passed by the well.  She paused.  Her brow unwrinkled as eyes lit up with sudden realization.  She walked up to the well.  She opened her arms.  Cries echoed up the stone walls, interrupted only briefly by the splash.

Heaven or Hell?

She closed her eyes and sighed with a smile.  Now she was sure.
